Lot Essay

The delicate tendril-form marquetry, the use of burr-yew veneers, and ebonised borders found on this pembroke table are stylistically typical of the work of the Broad Street cabinet-makers Mayhew and Ince. Similar free-flowing tendrils appear on two commodes, each attributed to Mayhew and Ince and illustrated in L. Wood, Catalogue of Commodes, London, 1994, pp. 222-228, figs. 26 and 27. A related pembroke table possibly by Mayhew and Ince, with a central oval medallion of burr-yew within a marquetry surround and characteristic wyverns, was sold in these Rooms, 17 October 2003, lot 222.
