The Newgate Calendar, first published in 1774, was widely read in Great Britain in the late 18th and 19th centuries. It is comprised of the biographies of forgers, highwaymen, murderers, mutineers, pirates, traitors and many others held in London's notorious Newgate Prison. It includes a description of their infamous crimes and trials. (4)
