This interesting Chinese Export games table in the English taste is inspired by the designs published by George Hepplewhite in The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, of 1794. The form relates closely to a table thought to have been acquired in China by a member of the Lyman family of Boston at the turn of the 19th century and now in the collection of the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities (illustrated in C. Crossman, The Decorative Arts of The China Trade, Woodbridge, 1991, p.270, fig.147). A similar pair of tables was sold by the Ernest and Rosemarie Kanzler Foundation, Sotheby's, New York, 18-19 April 2002, lot 345 ($32,862).

According to the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Archives, this table was purchased by Marie Mealand in London.
