AN EXTENSIVE CHINESE EXPORT PORCELAIN ARMORIAL DINNER SERVICE

Each piece enamelled in the center in famille rose colours with a spray of tulips and roses amidst smaller sprigs, the scalloped rims with lion crests at the top and a large coat-of-arms probably of Swythen impaling another family on the bottom, all bordered in rococo scrollwork in gilt and colours entwined in further sprigs, comprising:
A pair of oval soup tureens and covers, 13¾ in. (35 cm.) wide
A pair of two-handled wine coolers, 6½ in. (16.5cm.) high
5 sauceboats, 7 in. (17.8 cm.) wide
A pair of large mugs, 5 3/8 in. (13.7 cm.) high
A bowl, 10½ in. (26.6 cm.) diameter
A pair of bowls, 9 in. (22.9 cm.) diameter
A pair of platters, 19 1/8 in. (48.6 cm.) wide
3 platters, 17½ in. (44.4 cm.) wide

Lot Essay

The arms are most certainly of Swythen; the impaled arms are not recorded and without a recorded mention of Swythen it remains difficult to make a decision on the impaled coat.
