Lot Essay

The scene relates to period when the demon, Mara, distracted Shakyamuni from his meditations. Shakyamuni called on the Earth Goddess, Torani, to bear witness to his past acts of merit. She proceeded to wring the water out of her hair (a gift from Vessantara, Buddha's previous incarnation) which flooded the demon army away.
