On this day Japanese girls would receive dolls in imperial dress to make up a court of dolls according to hierarchy. The earliest record of Boy's Day, Tango-No-Sekku, is 730 A.D. This festival celebrates manly virtues like courage, persistence, combat skills, filial piety and respect for authority, portrayed in dolls representing folklore heroes. The dolls come in various sizes; the larger the doll, the more elaborate their outfit and accessories.
