Enamelled with Paris seated below an apple tree offering the golden apple to Aphrodite, while her sisters Hera and Athena look on, with a peacock and Cupid on the side, all within an iron-red and gilt shell scroll to the scalloped rim, minor frittings

Lot Essay

This scene was most likely based on a print made after an original by Rubens. Many versions exist, differing in colour scheme, border design and the manner the subjects are painted. Various examples of similar plates are illustrated in: Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes: Décor Occidental, Paris 1986, p.310.
