Lot Essay

In 1961, an American friend of Cecil Beaton, Mary Lasker, managed to secure a production of La Traviata at the Metropolitan Opera House on the condition that Beaton designed the sets and costumes. This Production finally took place in 1966, directed by Alfred Lunt and one critic judged that the sets and costumes outclassed even My Fair Lady in beauty and elegance.
