These events raised enormous interest and set the standard for the so-called Cargo sales at Christie's from then on. The porcelains that appeared on the surface some 340 years after they were lost attracted many collectors, museums, historians and academics. Of the many ships that were loaded for selling around the ports of South Asia, the Hatcher Cargo was lost unreported. No record in the V.O.C. registers was found and the vessel was thought to belong to an Oriental trading company. Furthermore, many objects that were included in the cargo were not usually produced for the Western market. The discovery of a Dutch pewter jug on the vessel however, suggests a connection with the V.O.C. The possibility remains of the ship having been a Chinese Junk trading under license from the V.O.C. headquarters in Batavia. The dating of the Hatcher cargo content can be deduced from the different types of porcelains that were included. Only one piece bearing a cyclical date corresponding to 1643 A.D, a blue and white oviform jar, was found on the wreck. Many pieces bear earlier reign-marks, mostly of late Ming emperors. Most blue and white porcelains date from the mid-1640's and are assumed to be no later than 1660. The large quantity of 'kraak' porcelain and a variety of Transitional ware, as well as the consistency of the included types support this presumption.
