Lot Essay

Franceso Gonin was an Italian painter of French origin. He was a gifted artist and had many talents. He painted historical subjects, still lifes, portraits and landscapes. He illustrated 'Les Fiancés' by Manzioni and 'Les Poésies en dialect milanias' by Carlo Porta. His important oeuvre also consisted of decorations for palaces, theatres and churches. He is admired for his feeling for colour, his precision and his techniques. He often received commissions from important aristocratic Italian families.

The present works are based on engravings after the portraits by van Dyck that formed part of his iconography (see M. Mauquoy-Heindrickx, L'iconographie d'Antoine van Dyck - Catalogue Raisonné, Brussels, 1956, pp. 238-39, no. 75; and pp. 228-29, no. 66).
