With broken pediment above a pair of tripled panelled doors enclosing three adjustable shelves flanked on each side by a cupboard enclosing four adjustable shelves, the lower section with a drawer above a pair of panelled doors enclosing a sliding shelf flanked on each side by four graduated drawers, on shaped bracket feet, the metalwork replaced, restorations and replacements to feet and mouldings

Lot Essay

Pembroke College, Oxford was granted its charter in 1624 by James I and took its name from the then University Chancellor, William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke. In 1728, Samuel Johnson (d. 1784) was an undergraduate, but was forced to leave thirteen months later due to lack of funds. James Smithson (d. 1829), founder of the Smithsonian Institute, received his MA from Pembroke College in 1786.
