Lot Essay

The present lot in terracotta is compositionally very close to a pair of bronze Fishing boys by Giambologna (1529-1608), in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence (illustrated in Avery, loc. cit.). Originally intended to adorn a fountain, these two and a third bronze, now lacking, were last recorded together in a Medici family inventory dating to 1667. The present lot certainly post-dates the bronze prototypes, and was probably made as decoration for a wealthy patron yearning to own a Giambologna-type model for his fashionable home.
