Lot Essay

On 22nd September, 1914 U-9, commanded by Ltn. Otto Weddigen, sank no fewer than three British cruisers in less than an hour: H.M.Ships Aboukir, Hogue and Cressy, with the loss of almost 1,400 men. This attack showed for the first time the capabilities of submarine warefare, forcing a hitherto dismissive Admiralty to radically re-think its tactics.
