This north-east health resort made famous by the Victorians was always a favourite place for Carmichael and he and his wife, Mary retired there in 1863 and five years later he was buried there. One of his earliest oil paintings in the 1820's was of Scarborough Castle, the ruins of which can be seen on the headland between the North and South Bays.
