Having formerly trained as a naval architect, Walter Thomas was employed by Lord Leverhulme in the acquisition and cataloguing of his art collection. By 1927, Thomas was working as an artist for the Liverpool Printing Company. Here Thomas began a lifelong association with Blue Funnel.
