AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED NECK-AMPHORA
WORKSHOP OF THE ANTIMENES PAINTER, CIRCA 530-520 B.C.
One side with four warriors in combat, each fully armed with greaves, a corslet and a crested Corinthian helmet, in the center a warrior lunging to the right, spearing his enemy on bended knee before him looking back, to the right a third warrior rushing in, his shield held out before him horizontally, to the left a fourth warrior lunging away, a lost Corinthian helmet at his feet; the other side with two warriors attacking a third between them, each fully armed, the warrior to the left with a Boeotian shield, the warrior in the center with a circular shield, a tripod as the blazon, the warrior to the right with a circular shield, two dolphins as the blazon; with rays above the foot, bands of key and dotted lotus bud chain below the scenes, alternating red and black tongues on the shoulders, palmette lotus chain on the neck, and palmettes and lotus buds framing the triple-reeded handles, details in added red and white, a two-character dipinto on the underside of the foot
