AN ATTIC RED-FIGURED PELIKE
CIRCA 460-440 B.C.
The obverse with a departure scene, a youth to the right wearing leather boots, a chlamys and a petasos that hangs over his shoulder, holding two spears in his left hand, extending his right hand, palm upward, a draped woman to the left, her hair bound in a broad headband, holding an oinochoe in her lowered right hand, and preparing to pour an offering from the phiale in her left hand; the reverse with a standing draped youth leaning on a staff, and a standing draped woman holding a kalathos, a footed chest on the ground between them; the scenes framed by coarsened pomegranate chain on either side, a band of meander and saltire squares below, the obverse with a band of palmettes and lotus above, the reverse with a band of meander with saltire squares above, adorsed palmettes below the ribbed handles
