AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED AMPHORA
CIRCA 330-310 B.C.
The obverse with a warrior seated within an Ionic naiskos with scrolling on its plinth, the warrior depicted in white, wearing a petasos over his shoulder, seated on his red chlamys, that is knotted around his neck, holding a corslet on his lap, leaning on his shield and holding a spear in his left hand, his head turned over his left shoulder, a youth to the right with his right leg on a rock, nude but for a chlamys over his left shoulder, holding a wreath, a situla and a laurel branch, and a draped female figure to the left holding a fillet and a laurel branch; the reverse with a youth and a female figure standing on either side of a stele tied with black and white fillets, the youth and female figure each holding a laurel branch and a patera, the female figure with a wreath in her right hand; a band of meander with saltire squares below the scenes, the shoulders of the obverse with a profile female head emerging from a flower amidst florals, with white rays and a thin band of dotted ovolo above, the reverse with long black tongues framed by a band of wave below and zigzag above, the neck with a palmette, a vine in white on the vessel mouth, and palmette complexes below the handles
