TWO APULIAN RED-FIGURED LIDDED OINOCHOAI
CIRCA 330-310 B.C.
One with Eros, his wings outstretched, seated on his himation, wearing a radiate stephane, a beaded necklace and bandolier, bracelets and shoes, holding a tympanum in his right hand, an oinochoe in his left, to the right a swan with its head thrown back, a laurel wreath with a central rosette on the neck, with a band of wave below, dotted ovolo above, and elaborate palmettes below the knotted handle; the lid with Eros flying to the left, holding a phiale and a wreath, palmettes opposite, the lid with an elaborate finial of overlapping leaves surmounted by a knob, the finial preserving polychromy over white slip; the other with a satyr and a maenad, the nude satyr to the left, holding a torch in his right hand, a pedum and chlamys in his left, the draped maenad holding a wreath and a situla, a hare between them; the ornament and lid similar to the preceding but for a band of rosettes on the vessel neck, and a seated Eros with a phiale and wreath on the lid
