A fine mandoline quatuor musical box
by Paillard, Vaucher, Fils, No. 17986, playing six airs (Tanhäuser Marsch, Lohengrin Hochzeitschmarsch, Ave Maria Meditation, Guillaume Tell Pastorale, Le Norma Casta Diva and Wein, Weib, Gesang Waltz), with mandoline teeth in groups of up to seven, double-spring motor and comb base concealed beneath a nickel-plated cover engraved Quatuor Accord Parfait, in crossbanded rosewood veneered case with ormolu handles and marquetry inlay of a cygnet to the front and pastoral fishing scene to the lid, the ebonished interior with ripple-and-wave beading and pewter stringing around recessed panel and engraved silvered tune-programme mounted behind the movement, on matching table with faceted tapering ebonised legs -- 35½in. (90cm.) wide, the cylinder 19½ x 3¼in. (49 x 8cm.)

Lot Essay

A similar Paillard Quatuor box was sold in these rooms on 14 December 2000, lot 111. The present example has approximately 165 teeth in the comb and tune last one and a half minutes. The legend 'En Accord Parfait' was used by Paillard only on musical boxes (usually mandoline) of exhibition quality.
