Lot Essay

Laurencekirk, north-east of Dundee, was the home of Charles Striven one of the chief makers of these ingenious boxes carved from solid wood (there are no corner joints) with the lid hinge formed integrally in the wood. The latter feature is said to have been invented by James Sandy, a cripple who died in 1819. This example has some carefully plugged holes, indicating an early change of movement.
