A rare advertising automaton of a magician,
probably by Roullet et Decamps, with papier-mâché head, moulded hair, articulated eyes, eyebrows and lower lip, his left hand holding a large tin book resting spine-down on a table, on panelled oak base with flashing glass panel (for illuminated advert) and seven-cam electric motor causing the figure to turn and nod his head, raise his eyebrows and move his lower lip, his eyes looking from left to right as he tips the book forwards and pulls out different advertising cards by means of a suction-pump in his right hand, in the original satin-lined black tailcoat over white waistcoat and wing-collar shirt with bow-tie, dress trousers and pointed papier-mâché shoes -- 41in.
