A fine monkey magician automaton by Phalibois,
with papier-mâché head, articulated lips and eyes, standing with a cup in each hand behind draped table on rocky base, the going-barrel movement operating seven wood cams and causing the figure to blink, chatter, turn his head and look down at each cup which he lifts alternately, and then both together, to reveal five pairs of changing items (red balls, white balls, dice, golden balls and then nothing), in the original brown velvet robe with matching tunic decorated with cut-paper star motif, lace-edged cream satin sleeves, cummerbund and conical hat, on ebonised base with two-air pull-string cylinder movement no. 2587 stamped J. Phalibois, under glass-dome -- 21½in. (55cm.) high, the bedplate stamped J. Phalibois a Paris, (table movement sticking), circa 1870.
