A fine rolled paper miniature Queen Anne house
simulating brick and stone with seven bays and two stories, each side with a window and door, the front with string course and quoining, the brickwork of red tightly rolled gilded paper, the mortar of straight gilded card, the roof of rolled gilt paper 'tiles', with loosely curly parapets, curious central skylight and plain paper chimney stacks, the central elongated front door with elaborate fantasy portico and four white curled paper semi-circular steps, the painted back drop showing garden wall and sky, curled white and gold paper trees and vines, red flowering shrubs, black and white checkered steps to the side doors, and brown earth with tufted grass and fourteen card pots of curled and cut-paper flowers and plants, a green mica covered arbour on either side, the front windows open to show an elaborate rolled paper staircase hung with oriental silk pictures, interior doors and four rooms with swagged muslin and silk curtains, edged with silk braids

INTERIOR
Second Bedroom (top left) - The walls hung with emerald green silk, the rolled gilt paper fireplace with framed oriental silk picture above and a canopied half-tester bed hung with cream curtains edged with green braid.

First Bedroom (top right) - Lined with yellow and white figured silk, the rolled paper corner fireplace with dogs and mirror above, the canopied half-tester with red and white rolled paper back, white curtains edged with red braid and two rolled gilded paper chairs.

Garden Room (bottom left) - The walls covered in mica with two oriental pictures and a side table with 'lock'.

Cabinet Room (bottom right) - Rolled paper corner fireplace, cabinet on stand and elaborate high backed chair, the walls with remains of oriental hangings.

The case mirrored with sloping perspective sides --21in. (54cm) wide, --17½in. (44cm.) high and --7in. (18cm.) deep

Lot Essay

This house is of exceptional quailty, the style of modelling is taken from a house of the early 18th century and there is no reason to doubt that it dates from this period. Although rolled paper was most popular in the mid to late 18th century. It is most unusual to have an interior and furnishings with one of these houses, and these also appear to be Queen Anne in style.
