Lot Essay

This doll had been passed down from generation to generation. She was originally purchased by the present owner's great great grandparents for their daughter, born in 1889. They owned a shoe shop on the rue de la Gare in a small town, in the region of Seine et Marne, West of Paris. The daughter inherited the business and moved to a larger store in the same town. She later married a soldier, who was wounded in the Great War of 1914-18, and gave birth to a daughter, who in turn, lived above the same shoe store and gave birth to the present owner's father. They were forced to flee during the Second World War but were not able to escape the country. They moved to Paris instead. The doll was passed on to the son who in turn passed it on to the present owner.

The full provenance will be provided to the purchaser of this lot, together with a quantity of photographs of the family.
