Autograph fragment of Conan Doyle's first literary creation, the story of a Bengal tiger, written at the age of six, 36 words written in pencil, 157 x 75mm.
also autograph letter signed by Conan Doyle's mother, Mary Doyle, to Jean, his second wife, presenting the fragment to her, 'the actual very first of the famous A. C. D. long list of great books ... If I cd frame it in gold, it will no way increase its value', 1911, 4 pages, 8vo; one autograph note by Mary Doyle concerning the fragment and printed copy of Conan Doyle's essay 'My First Book VI. - Juvenilia' in The Idler, January 1893, Vol. 2, pp. 633-640, with his alterations for a future edition.
The printed extract is from the first English edition, American issue, of My First Book, a compilation of essays by famous authors, with an introduction by Jerome K. Jerome, Philadelphia, J. B. Lippincott & Co, 1894. In this essay Conan Doyle gives an account of his literary apprenticeship including this first attempt at composition. 'I ... have a very distinct recollection of the achievement. It was written ... upon foolscap paper, in what might be called a fine bold hand ... There was a man in it, and there was a tiger. I forget which was the hero, but it didn't matter much, for they became blended into one about the time when the tiger met the man'.
This essay so impressed Robert Louis Stevenson when he read it in The Idler, that he submitted an article of his own on 'Treasure Island'. Green and Gibson, C3. (4)
