Self portrait [by Arthur Conan Doyle, 1881], depicting himself holding his diploma aloft, inscribed by him 'Licensed to kill', pen and ink (browned, small tear in centre fold), 130 x 100mm; also, Conan Doyle's Certificate of Additional Qualifications, Scottish Branch of General Medical Council, Edinburgh, printed with manuscript insertions, dated 14 October 1886, lower right-hand corner torn away, 175 x 330mm; and, Conan Doyle's copy of Milne, Alexander. Manual of Materia Medica and Therapeutics, 2nd edition, Edinburgh, 1869, interleaved with his manuscript list of 'Medicines and their doses', medical notes on 43 pages of interleaves (3 removed), a poem beginning 'It was a merry mariner', 28 lines, and numerous underlinings in printed text, 8°, half calf, upper cover detached, rubbed and worn at corners.

Conan Doyle began his medical studies at Edinburgh University in October 1876 and emerged as a Bachelor of Medicine in August 1881. (3)
