CRABBE'S PRACTICE
Sir Arthur CONAN DOYLE. Autograph manuscript (lacking final paragraphs) of the story entitled 'Crabbe's Practice', written in a bold, neat hand, some corrections, original thread tie, verso of last leaf browned, [c. 1884], 19 pages, folio.
'Crabbe's Practice' was published in the Boy's Own Paper, Christmas number 1884, pp. 54-7 and collected in Tales of Adventure and Medical Life, London, John Murray, 1922. The story of Thomas Waterhouse Crabbe MB and the manner in which he established his medical practice in a provincial English town is drawn partly from Conan Doyle's own experience. It concerns a young, eccentric and unscrupulous doctor, the first literary incarnation of Dr George Budd, who was to reappear as Cullingworth in The Stark Munro Letters and also in Conan Doyle's autobiography.
