letter to Conan Doyle from a reader, pointing out a mistake in the text, 1927.

The Maracot Deep was based on Conan Doyle's close study of marine life and exploration, and illustrates his interest in the Atlantis legend. The manuscript was completed in May 1927 and published in 1929 by John Murray in London and Doubleday, Doran in New York.

Many of Challenger's characteristics - including the 'Assyrian' beard were modelled on Conan Doyle's tutor at Edinburgh University, the physiologist Professor William Rutherford.
