Early autograph notebook containing IDEAS FOR STORIES INCLUDING SHERLOCK HOLMES, poetry, openings for speeches, 'Points for American Speech', aphorisms, list of titles and wordcounts for a projected collection of stories entitled The Valley of Shadow [published as Round the Red Lamp, 1894], sketch for the play 'Admiral Denver', notes entitled 'Paris 1894' comparing British and French attitudes, list of Presidents of the United States, 73 pages plus blanks, many removed, browned, binding loose and lacking spine, original tie, 152 x 100mm, and one other notebook.

This notebook contains a wealth of ideas for stories e. g. 'The man who was given a gold bangle by a lady - her husband discovers it and he then allows himself to be prosecuted as a thief rather than betray the giver'; 'Story of the Yellow Mark (S.H.)'; 'Story of bedridden man whose sister used to answer letters from dead wife'; 'Story of the effect upon a Criminal of an overdose of electricity'; 'Story about a Trunk left at some house (S.H.)'; essay entitled 'Woman (A Study)'; verses entitled 'A Woman's Love'; reminders, addresses and other details.
