autograph notes of his reading of Walter Scott, Edward Gibbon, Dr Johnson, George Borrow, 'Science not to be neglected' and George Meredith, 5½ pages, 4to, on a notepad;
autograph manuscript and typescript of an essay on Edward Gibbon, beginning 'To the man who is fond of books no happier lot could be given than to be born in such a position that he shall have ready access to them, and to have such a trade that he can utilise them', four pages, 8vo, and one page, 4to, in autograph, and 37¼ pages, lightly corrected typescript, with three other typescript copies;
and typescripts (apparently later transcripts, without autograph annotations) of 'An address on the subject of literature', 20½ pages, 4to, with another copy; and of a literary address on George Meredith, 25½ pages, 4to, with another copy. (9)
