POEMS

Sir Arthur CONAN DOYLE. Autograph manuscripts, drafts and neat copies of 12 poems, including 'In Memoriam [Richard Doyle]' (signed and dated Southsea, 1883), 'A Parable [of the Cheese-mites]' (signed and dated 23 May 1898) , 'An Alpine Walk' (signed), 'To a Literary Novice', another beginning 'The rattle of the bicycles' (signed with initials), the remainder untitled, together 16 pages, various sizes, (one split at centre fold); with three printed booklets of poems by Conan Doyle, comprising The Rhyme of the Road (two copies), and When the Guards came through, and one other item.

The poem in memory of Conan Doyle's uncle, the artist Richard ('Dicky') Doyle is a fine fanciful vision of his body laid out in his studio, surrounded by the twittering fairies of his fairy paintings. Of the remainder, one fragment (in two versions) is representative of his military poems ('What do the soldiers say? Dam! Dam! Dam!'), two are parables, three (one a fragmentary draft) are on historical subjects, and the remainder are on the domestic and familiar subjects at which he excelled:
'The rattle of the bicycles
The cosy village tea
The walking up the long long hills
Which seemed too short to me ...
Pink ribbons in a lady's hat,
A roadside violet,
The little things in life are oft
The hardest to forget'. (17)
