SIR HENRY IRVING (1838-1905)

Six autograph letters signed to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, 1892-1902, 10 pages, 8vo and one letter signed, 2 pages, 8vo, four laid down on card or with traces of mount, also: autograph letter by Conan Doyle to Irving (third person); three autograph letters signed, two by H. B. Irving to Conan Doyle, one to Lady Conan Doyle, 1918, and one by Laurence Irving; printed copy of Waterloo: New York and London, Samuel French, 1907, Green and Gibson, A32, and a few press cuttings.

Three of Irving's letters refer to the play Waterloo which Conan Doyle sent to Irving in 1892 for his consideration ('A delightful & remarkable little play', Irving replies, 'which I should very much like to have the opportunity of acting at some time', 7 March 1892); a letter of 1898 refers to problems over remuneration.

Irving bought the full acting rights of Conan Doyle's play Waterloo, which was based on his short story 'A Straggler of '15'. The play was first performed at Bristol on 21 September 1894 and at the Lyceum Theatre, London, 4 May 1895, with Irving in the role of Corporal Gregory Brewster. As the play was the property of Irving it could not be published until after his death. (11)
