16° (157 x 104mm). Half-title, dedication, photographic portrait frontispiece of Arthur Conan Doyle by Elliot and Fry, title with floral ornament, 7 black and white plates, endpapers blocked in light blue with monogram repeated from upper cover, t.e.g. (Upper hinge split, between frontispiece and title, front free endpaper lightly browned.) Blue cloth blocked in dark blue on upper cover and in gilt on spine, covers with floral borders around central architectural frame with publisher's monogram (corners and head of spine very lightly rubbed). Provenance: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (ownership inscription to title, 'A Conan Doyle', and note).
CONAN DOYLE'S ADVANCE COPY OF THE SUPPRESSED FIRST ISSUE OF THE SECOND ENGLISH EDITION, INSCRIBED IN HIS OWN HAND: 'This volume should be unique. When I saw (with horror) that they had put my portrait upon it, I said I would destroy the whole edition rather than pass it. They then put Lord Roberts as was proper. A.C.D.' Conan Doyle refused to pass this edition, not only because of his objection to the frontispiece portrait, and dislike of the 'Sir Arthur Conan Doyle' on the spine, but also because it omitted the later revisions of the many impressions of the first edition, and a map. Only a few copies were distributed before the issue was destroyed. Green and Gibson B1(f).
