Correspondence addressed to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle on the subject of the protection of troops in action, 1915-16: two typed letters signed D. Lloyd George ('I may tell you that we are giving very special attention to this question ... but ... our great difficulty is to get the soldiers at the front to take them into use'), two, War Office, 1916, 3 pages, 4to; Ministry of Munitions (two typed letters signed, discussing the weight of bullet-proof armour) 1915, 2½ pages, folio; Professor Miles Walker (typed letter signed, deploring War Office delay, Victoria University of Manchester, 1916, 3 pages, 4to; letters from manufacturers including Roneo Ltd ('we have produced two patterns of bullet-stopping body shields ... and several of each type are being experimented with by Lt. Col. Archer Shee M. P. upon men in his battalion), 1916, with drawing of 'Roneo-Miris Body Shield', and two others; also, letters by private individuals (nine, two with diagrams); one letter relating to 'the saving of life at sea', Admiralty' 1915, and one other, four docketed by Conan Doyle.
Conan Doyle conducted a vigorous campaign which was encouraged by many Army officers to secure better protection for troops. He opened the campaign with a letter to The Times, 4 August 1916. (24)
