AINSLIE
Sir Arthur CONAN DOYLE. A series of 12 autograph letters signed to 'Ainslie', Southsea, Haslemere, Eastbourne and Cairo, 12 June and 1 July 1896 and n.d., together 10 pages, 8vo.
The letters in the main are invitations or make arrangements for weekends - occasionally with a Spiritualist element ('If when I come up we could engage a medium it would be very interesting ... I don't know of any reliable one'). In a New Year's greeting for 1897, Conan Doyle complains of the inaccuracy of an article by Max Beerbohm on dandies. An undated letter confesses 'The only photo I can find is old and somewhat faded. I begin at times to feel old and somewhat faded myself so perhaps it just meets the case'. Three letters written from Cairo suggest meetings with Ainslie, who is evidently in the vicinity - one proposes a quick trip to Jerusalem. (12)
