THEODORE ROOSEVELT (1858-1919)
Typed letter signed ('Theodore Roosevelt') to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, 10 Chesterfield Street, London, 8 June 1910, one page, 4to; with a typed letter to Conan Doyle apparently with secretarial signature from his hospital bed after being shot, October 1912, 'as you know, a gunshot wound is a serious thing', one page, 4to.
Roosevelt acknowledges receipt of a pamphlet from Conan Doyle, and admits that he has already some intimation from the US Consul-General of what it will contain. 'But, my dear Sir Arthur, as yet I don't see how I can act, and I was bred on the plains to conduct myself in accordance with the cow-puncher's maxim: "Never draw unless you intend to shoot"'.
The letter may refer to Conan Doyle's attempt to lobby Roosevelt in relation to conditions in the Congo, subsequent to publication of his The Crime of the Congo (1909).
