A ROMAN MARBLE HERM HEAD OF DIONYSOS
CIRCA 1ST-2ND CENTURY A.D.
Classicizing in style, inspired by a Greek original of the 5th century B.C., the god with a spade-shaped beard of thin vertical overlapping locks with alternating angled striations, a thin moustache framing his lips, a deeply-drilled recession below the lower lip, his large eyes unarticulated, his hair looped up over a broad headband, the curled ends falling in a thick mass before his ears, three rows of tight snail curls framing his forehead and topped with a peaked diadem, with a long spiralling plait falling onto his left shoulder, the herm sculpted nearly in the round but for the proper right edge, its smooth surface suggesting use in high relief within a niche
13½ in. (34.2 cm.) high
