SYRIA, CIRCA 2ND CENTURY A.D.
The upper surface sculpted with four knucklebone-shaped projections, one in each corner, a raised circular boss in the center once supporting a now-lost element, the long sides each well sculpted with two tiered rosettes, the area between the tiers deeply drilled, the short sides each carved in relief, one with a peacock moving to the right and looking back, a bunch of grapes in its beak, pomegranates in the field, the other with a head of Medusa, her long wavy hair surrounding her face, framed by snakes, their heads turned out, their tails tied below her chin
