Hunt at his most sombre and romantic. Comparable effects were captured in two watercolours in the Fuller sale: View on the Rhine with a steam tug and barges and Ehrenberg on the Mosel (Christie's, London, 7 April 2000, lots 44 and 45, both illustrated in catalogue).
