Lot Essay

This watercolour has been dated to the 1880s or 1890s, which must mean that it was executed not only long after the event represented but many years after Hine had left his native Brighton and settled in London. No doubt the hurricane had made a great impression on him as a boy of thirteen, and he recalls it here with an almost Turnerian sense of atmosphere and drama.

An account of the hurricane seems to appear in the Times, 30 November 1824, p. 2.
