A characteristic Pastel of Mrs. Ballack./by Daniel Gardner - This Lady's husband Mr. Hanway Ballack was a nephew of Joseph Hanway the well know philanthropist who established the Foundling Hospital and first introduced the umbrella to England - Mr Ballack on the death of his Uncle assumed the name of Hanway.-' (on the label on the reverse of the frame)

Lot Essay

Mrs Hanway Ballack's husband was the nephew of Joseph Hanway the philanthropist and co-founder of the foundling hospital. The Hanways were friends and neighbours of the Burneys and in Dr. Johnson's circle.
