Lot Essay

Abbott spent nearly all his life in Exeter and its environs. He made only one extended journey outside the West Country in 1791, when he made a sketching tour of Scotland, the Lake District, Lancashire, Derbyshire and Warwickshire. This present watercolour was undoubtedly executed during this 1791 tour.
