Lot Essay

The present detailed and highly worked drawing was executed in the mid 1750s and unusually for drawings dating from his later Ipswich period, Gainsborough has favoured a classical composition. J. Hayes, loc.cit. states that the pencil work in the cross-hatching in the sky and the treatment of the tree trunks, foliage and foreground is identical with a drawing listed as being in the possession of Edward Seago, J. Hayes, op.cit., p. 153, no. 180 and also op.cit., p. 148, no. 158.
