Ibbetson was drawn to the daily life of London and its environs. In the present watercolour we see his interest in Londoners at leisure, his mastery of crowd scenes and his fascination in human activity. The array of promenaders, elegant ladies, lovers, children are each depicted with incisive detail. Ibbeston lived in London intermittently for about twenty years, between 1777-1798 and artistically it was the most influencial period in his life.

Ibbetson executed another version of this watercolour entitled 'Fashionables of the Day, and a large watercolour entitled Skating on the Serpentine, 1796, is in the collection of Eton College, see A Genius in Watercolour, Christie's, London, January 2003, no. 29., illustrated.
