Lot Essay

The present watercolour has traditionally been attributed to Bonington, we are grateful to Patrick Noon for reattributing this drawing to William Callow. It would appear to date from the 1830s, the period when Callow shared a studio with Thomas Shotter Boys in Paris, where both artist's fell under the influence of Bonington (see lot 149).
