Ward was fascinated by nature on a grand scale and the potential psychological impact of such a scene on the viewer. Ward has tried to convey the scale of the scene by joining together two sheets and by the inclusion of the bridge, miniscule and perched at the top of the composition.
Ward exhibited an oil painting of the Devil's Bridge at the Royal Academy, 1846, no. 190.
