In 1848 Brabazon visited Spain and encountered the paintings of Velásquez for the first time. Velásquez's fluid, painterly treatment made a great impression on the young artist, and, after the death of his father in 1858 and for several years afterwards, he made frequent visits to the Prado. Brabazon made studies after many artists (119 in total), and these works provide a record of Brabazon's continual process of study. They are not straight copies but rather re-interpretations in his own pictorial language. He interpreted the material of a painting as freely as he did the material of nature.
