Lot Essay

Boys executed a soft-ground etching of a street scene in Rouen, depicting the spire of Rouen cathedral, illustrated in J. Roundell Thomas Shotter Boys, London, 1974, p. 110, pl. 39 Vue de Rouen. In this present watercolour Boys has shows similar enjoyment in depicting the gothic architectural lightness, relishing in the vertical thrust of the slender piers, juxtaposed with the medieval streets and domestic architecture in the foreground.
