Lear left Corfu on 4 April 1864 for Athens, which disappointed him, since he did find it the same as he had remembered it. Lear felt that it was too early to return to England and set off for Crete, within a week Giorgio his servant had joined him and they left for Khanéa. By the end of May Lear had left Crete for England.
